Fishing for Herring, San Pedro River Review Janice D. Rubin

Fishing for Herring

That brilliant crisp morning

the sun rays skipped persuasively

over the sleeping pier.

Six sharp hooks

on each rig, snag on

just about anything they touch.

The blue undersea, the herring share

engages the blinding light.

Six herring appear, one on each hook.

With the sudden exposure to open air

revealed and naked

they wriggle, wildly silver.

Working the coordination of the jigging line

not too high or hard,

just a slight movement, just a desire.
